The planet’s most diverse music awards program honors artistry and daring rather than streams and social reach and celebrates everything that makes indie music authentic and unique.
This year’s winning projects were culled from thousands of Album, EP, Song, Producer, Music Video and Visual Design submissions from 73 countries on 6 continents; Nominees were announced earlier this year.
Over the course of its history, the program has recognized an eclectic roster of established and emerging talent including: Killer Mike, Macy Gray, Jackson Browne, Pete Seeger, Flying Lotus, Meghan Trainor, RuPaul and many, many more independent innovators from around the world.
SEKOU made history this year as the first contemporary Spoken Word poet in twelve (12) years to receive a “Best Spoken Word Album” GRAMMY® nomination. His self-titled avant-garde 6-track offering, SEKOU ANDREWS & THE STRING THEORY, was nominated alongside Michelle Obama, The Beastie Boys, Eric Alexandrakis, and John Waters in the category that includes Poetry, Audio Books, and Storytelling.
During his 17-year career as a full-time poet, SEKOU has innovated and coined “Poetic Voice,” a new category of public speaking. This cutting-edge style of communication is disrupting the speaking industry by seamlessly fusing inspirational speaking with spoken word poetry and is electrifying audiences and the world’s largest organizations.
Quincy Jones has said of Sekou, “I’m starting to think, there isn’t a crowd this young brother can’t bring on their feet.”
