One of the foremost faces of the current progressive jazz movement, 2x GRAMMY® Award-nominated drummer/composer/producer Nate Smith releases the third song from his inspired new album, Kinfolk 2: See The Birds. “Altitude” is available at all DSPs now. The song is a soaring mid-tempo instrumental featuring Michael Mayo singing gorgeous wordless melodic passages alongside an alluring motif that gives way to sumptuous solos from Jon Cowherd on piano and vibraphonist Joel Ross, before Mayo returns to the spotlight to showcase his lissome virtuosity. A live-in-the-studio performance video of “Altitude” is streaming now on YouTube.
“When I wrote this tune, I was thinking about all of those nights I stayed up and stared out the window as a teenager, dreaming about the life of a traveling musician,” says Smith. “This melody starts on the ground and then rises, and I hope it evokes the feeling of taking flight. This song is the sound of a dream; a dream I followed here to this very moment.”
